Why do existing nebulisers fall short?

There are three existing classes of nebuliser: jet, ultrasonic and mesh. Each uses a different method to convert liquid medication into an aerosol for inhalation. However, each method can subject sensitive biologics to mechanical shear, thermal stress and agglomeration, all of which lead to damage. These technical limitations are compounded by poor user experience: noise, low portability, long treatment time and difficulties with cleaning.

How does Nebu~Flow solve this problem?

A groundbreaking new approach, Nebu~Flow’s unique, patented technology gently aerosolises these delicate molecules by using acoustic waves (AWs) to control the size of aerosol droplets. This allows many more formulas to be nebulised at the correct size for efficient delivery into the pulmonary system – including the delicate biologics seen as the next frontier in modern medicine. Nebu~Flow addresses other unmet needs, with a convenient, efficient nebuliser design.

How does Nebu~Flow’s technology work?

AWs are generated on piezoelectric materials through the use of resonant structures (interdigitated electrodes). When the AWs reach a volume of liquid placed in their paths, they refract into the liquid, transferring part of their energy to it, which results in agitation and surface vibration. For MHz frequencies, these vibrations at the surface of the liquid lead to drop ejection.

By coupling these into microstructure arrays, Nebu~Flow’s patented technology provides precise control over the aerosol droplet size in the clinically-useful range (i.e. smaller than 5µm), enhancing the efficiency of pulmonary drug delivery. Most importantly, the technology enables the nebulisation of complex low surface tension formulations and suspensions, meaning that a far greater range of drugs can be delivered via inhalation.

What Nebu~Flow means for drug development

Enables delivery of biologics and hard-to-nebulise drugs

Paves the way for nebulised medication for many more conditions that are currently treated orally or intravenously.

Provides extended protection for the pharma industry

Patented technology creates new opportunities for drug-device combinations, with market exclusivity.

Enables better data for more personalised care

Patients benefit from real-time data, high-quality inputs for AI and digital biomarkers, which allow more personalised, responsive care plans.

Improved patient compliance, convenience and comfort

Beyond the advantages of needle-free treatment, Nebu~Flow offers patients a silent, portable, hand-held device that is easy to clean and cuts the time traditionally needed for nebulisation.

More sustainable, eco-friendly drug delivery

Reduces drug wastage, the carbon footprint associated with drug production and the amount of drug washed into sewage. Device uses lead-free piezo materials and recyclable parts.
